The spring is a wonderful season but with the blooming nature also arrive biting flies. Mosquito bites are not only annoying and painful they can also transmit disease.

  • Make your own anti mosquito lotion

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your body lotion.

For dry skin you can moisture with coconut oil. Take 5 tea spoons of coconut oil mix it with 3 drops of tea tree essential oil. If you don’t like the smell of the tea tree or it’s too strong, you can use instead the same amount of lavender oil, then add 3 drops of citronella oil and finally 3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.

  • Citronella candles and torches

Light citronella candles in your garden, it will diminish the number of the flies by approximately 50%.

  • Make your own natural biting flies repellent

Fill a 1/3 of a glass with white vinegar and add 10 drops of citronella oil. Biting flies find the smell of citronella unbearable. They also detest the smell of orange, lemon, lavender, basil and catnip. If like you like the smell of these add 5 drops, and then a 1/3 glass of olive oil. You can leave this in a bowl or glass on the windowsill and the mosquitoes will stay away.

Can certain plants use as biting flies repellents?

Using plants as a biting flies repellent is not effective. Although Mosquitoes hate the smell of the eucalyptus, catnip, basil and calendula if you grow them in your garden it will not effectively deter mosquitoes since the concentration isn’t high enough to be effective.

A better deterrence is to fill a third glass of water and add the same amount of white vinegar. Mosquitoes detest the smell of vinegar and if you’ll leave the glass on the window shelf they will stay as far as they can.

Avoid using Synthetic repellents

Synthetic repellents are not Eco friendly and have the potential of causing health problems. There are two effective and widely used insect repellents, Deet based products or picardin. Both are synthetic chemical that provides one to six-plus hours of complete protection though no proven adverse health effects there is no doubt it’s toxic since in some cases a contact might cause skin rash. Moreover, the deet based products for instance are forbidden for uses on children under 2 months of age.

The link between the chemical based products and sickness was never conclusively proved, in part because of not nearly enough research. But since you can find a variety of natural effective solutions so there is no apparent reason to prefer risking your health with the synthetic repellents.
